How Long Instagram Data Requests Take in 2026: Real Wait Times and Delays

Meta's official line is "a few minutes to 14 days." In practice, most requests finish far sooner than that — how long depends almost entirely on what you actually ask for.

    What to realistically expect

A full archive on a smaller or newer account usually compiles in 30 minutes to 2 hours.

For older accounts with years of photos, videos, and DMs, a complete export typically takes 4 to 12 hours. During busy periods it can stretch past 24 hours, though hitting Meta's full 14-day window is rare.

A targeted export — just your followers and following data, say — is much faster. Those usually arrive in 5 to 15 minutes, since Meta's only pulling simple database records instead of compressing gigabytes of media.

    What actually slows it down

Data volume is the biggest factor. Reels, archived live streams, and high-res photos take real processing power to compress. An account with years of media sits in the queue longer than one with very little.

Date range matters too. "All time" forces Meta to query your entire account history across multiple systems. Narrowing to the last year or month cuts that down significantly.

Format and quality settings play a smaller role. JSON tends to generate faster than HTML, since it's raw data without a rendered preview layer. Setting media quality to "Low" also reduces the load.

Timing matters less, but it's real — requests submitted during peak hours or right after a major platform update can sit behind other queued jobs.

How to get your export faster

If you just need your connections data, you don't need to request everything.

Go to Meta Accounts Centre → Download your information, and choose "Select types of information" instead of "All available information."

Pick only Followers and following. Set the date range to "All time" so you get your full contact history, and choose JSON as the format. Skipping media cuts out more than 90% of the processing load, so this version usually lands in your inbox within minutes.

Once it's downloaded, you can open it directly, or run it through something like ByeBud, which parses the export locally in your browser — no login required — to show you inactive followers or who's unfollowed you.

    If your request seems stuck

Instagram emails you a download link once your archive's ready, but that email sometimes gets caught by spam filters or delayed.

Instead of waiting, go back to "Download your information" in your settings and check the Available downloads tab directly — if it's ready, you'll see an active download button with the file size and expiration date.

Once ready, your file stays available for 4 days, after which it's deleted and you'll need to request it again.

If a request sits in "Requested" for more than 48 hours with no movement, it's likely stalled. Cancel it and resubmit with a narrower scope — that resolves it in most cases. Avoid firing off several full-archive requests at once, since that can trigger a temporary rate limit on your account.
