How to Check Instagram Unfollowers on Your Phone Without a Computer

Most "check your unfollowers" apps in the app store want your Instagram login. That's a real risk to your account, not just a privacy nitpick. You don't need any of them — you can do this entirely on your phone using Instagram's own export.

    Why login-based apps are risky

These apps typically store your credentials and simulate your Instagram session from their own servers to scrape your follower list.

That exposes your private messages and personal data to an unverified developer. It also triggers Instagram's own security systems, which flag repeated logins from unknown IPs and devices — often resulting in action blocks or suspensions. Many of these apps also break every time Instagram updates its interface, so even a paid subscription can stop working overnight.

Request your export in the app

Instagram has a built-in data download tool that works on both iPhone and Android, no computer needed.

Open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the menu icon, then Accounts Centre. From there: Your information and permissions → Download your information → Download or transfer information, and select your profile.

Choose "Some of your information" rather than a full backup, then check only "Followers and following." This keeps the file small and fast to generate.

On the last screen, set format to JSON instead of HTML, date range to "All time," and media quality to Low. Submit, and Meta will email you once it's ready.

Handling the ZIP file on your phone

Once the download's ready, go back to the same Accounts Centre screen to grab it.

On iPhone: the file saves into your Files app under Downloads. Tap it and iOS unpacks it automatically.

On Android: it saves to your file manager (Files by Google, Samsung My Files, or similar). Tap the archive and select Extract.

Inside, look for the connections folder — you want followers_1.json and following.json.

Compare the files in your mobile browser

Manually comparing two JSON files on a small screen isn't realistic. This is where a browser-based tool actually earns its place.

ByeBud processes your export locally, right in Safari or Chrome on your phone — nothing gets uploaded, and it never asks for your login. Just open the site, select your ZIP or JSON files, and it runs the comparison in a few seconds, giving you a clean list of who doesn't follow you back and who's mutual.

    Making changes safely

Once you've got your list, make the actual changes manually in the Instagram app — skip any tool offering to automate the cleanup, since bulk actions get flagged as bot behavior.

Work in batches: 20-30 unfollows per session, spread across the day rather than all at once. Use the search bar in your Following list to find each username from your audit, and tap Following → Unfollow one at a time.

Done this way — official export, local comparison, manual cleanup — you get the same result as any paid app, without ever handing over your login.
